He started studying Drama at the University of Stellenbosch, but his studies were cut short after 5 months. This was because in May of that year, while on tour with Nicholis Louw in Port Elizabeth, he auditioned for Afrikaans Idols. In August, he was crowned runner-up and a week later, he was the proud owner of a recording contract with Sony Music. In October 2007 he packed up and moved to Johannesburg. His debut album, Kô Ma Hier, was released later in that year. In the same year, he won the Huisgenoot Tempo-Award for the Best Newcomer and also became the face of House & Home. 2009 heralds the launch of his brand new album, Sê My Nou. Willem also recently won his first international award in the EuroStar Awards, presented by Eurovision. The track, Dis Alles ’n Miracle [ Everything’s a miracle], from his debut album, won in the category for Best Original Afrikaans song. What makes the award even more remarkable is that Willem competed with the Belgian platinum-selling star, Christoff de Bolle, within the category. His brand new and long awaited album is here at last! Sê My Nou’s pumping rhythms and beats will grab your immediately and have your feet itching to get onto the dance floor. With this album Willem promises to silence even his greatest critics. With Byron Kuntz on production, it is definitely an album that you will not tire of hearing over and over. During 2011, Willem will be part of Deon Opperman’s musical, TREE AAN.
